. It was one of nineteen science high schools in the Republic of Korea. In 2009, it became an 'academy for gifted students' selected by ministry of education of Korea. Now it is one of four such academies in Republic of Korea, and a leading high school in the nation.

The school selects its intake from the top 0.01% of middle school graduates. There are about 180 students in each grade. The general program is a three-year course, but an early graduation program also exists. About one-third of sophomore students graduate one year earlier than typical high school students.
