Senim Silla (real name Ross Rowe) is a hip hop soul
artist from Pontiac, Michigan
, best known for his role in the rap duo Binary Star
when Senim was 8 years old. Detroit introduced Senim to drugs, guns, violence and rap which he described as a loss of innocence. After living in Detroit for nearly 5 years, the Rowes moved to Pontiac, Michigan
after Senim was robbed, an incident Senim cites on the song "Wild Life".
Senim says he "became Senim Silla" in Pontiac. During high school Senim and Malaki The Most Hi became good friends. Up until this time Senim was only rapping in secret but during lunchtime at school Senim and others began to gather and showcase their talents in freestyle sessions. It was during one of these sessions that Senim would meet One Be Lo
(shortened "Lo") for the first time, whose rapping Senim found impressive.
In the summer of 1993, Malaki proposed to Senim to start a group called "The Spoox". Senim agreed readily. Later a third member, C-Note
, and a fourth, Lo. The Spoox were short-lived but Senim and Lo became very close. The two became involved in criminal activities, culminating in the robbery of a local pizza shop. Senim and Lo were sentenced to 3–20 years for armed robbery in May 1994. Housed at different facilities, protocol in cases of co-defendants, Senim embraced Islam and began to study a number of different subjects, including psychology and philosophy. A few months later, Lo would be transferred to the same facility as Senim where to two began rapping together again. Lo proposed the two form a group. Senim agreed and the duo agreed on the name Binary Star
