Mission

The vision of the School is to become a leader in the delivery of innovative programs that prepare students for global leadership in business and society. The mission of the school is “to promote harmony and cooperation between management and labor, and greater understanding of industrial and labor relations, thereby to enhance the unity and welfare of the people of the state.”

Education

The School offers a full range of degree and non-credit learning opportunities, with scholarship assistance available to highly qualified applicants.

Undergraduate: In partnership with the School of Arts and Sciences and select community colleges across NJ, SMLR offers:
a Bachelor of Arts in Labor Studies and Employment Relations, a Bachelor of Science in Labor and Employment Relations, and an Undergraduate Minor in Human Resource Management

Professional Masters: The School offers three master degree programs: a Master of Human Resource Management – to develop strategic HR leaders, a Master of Labor and Employment Relations – to develop individuals for a wide range of positions in building effective workplaces, and a Global Executive Master in Human Resource Leadership – targeted at leaders with the potential to run the HR function for a global company. In addition, SMLR has taken a lead role in creating the new all-Rutgers Master of Business and Science.

Doctorate: SMLR offers an interdisciplinary PhD in Industrial Relations and Human Resources. Recent placements of Ph.D. graduates include the University of Illinois, California State University, McMaster University, Pennsylvania State University, Pace University, Simon Fraser University, and Meredith College.

Continuing Education: SMLR offers a wide range of short course offerings, both public and custom in-house, through the Center for Management Development and Labor Extension program

Research

SMLR's faculty consists of some of the most published and cited scholars in the fields of HR and labor relations. Among their accomplishments are:
  • Producing the highest impact research in the world’s leading academic workforce-related journals as compared to top business schools and peer institutions
  • Susan Jackson, Distinguished Professor of Human Resource Management, currently serves as President of the Academy of Management.
  • Sue Schurman, Professor II (Labor Studies and Employment Relations) and Dean of University College Community at Rutgers, is President of the International Federation of Workers Education Association.
  • Mark Huselid, Professor II (Human Resources Management) is one of the most-cited scholars in the field of organizational sciences.
  • Dorothy Sue Cobble received not one, but two prestigious awards this year – a fellowship from the Russell Sage Foundation, and 2010 winner of the Sol Stetin Award for Labor History.

Service

Some of the many ways in which SMLR applies its expertise to help the employers and workforce of New Jersey are:
  • Center for Women and Work – an innovative leader in research and programs that promotes gender equity, a high skill economy, and reconciliation of work and well-being for all.
  • Center for Human Resource Strategy- created to advance and shape the field of Human Resource Management by forging partnerships between leading HR faculty researchers and strategy-minded, senior HR executives.
  • Bio-1 – SMLR played a lead role in securing a $5.1 million grant for Central New Jersey to bring bioscience educators and industry together to build a leading bioscience cluster (see: www.bio-one.org)
  • Rutgers Labor Management Partnership - SMLR's goal is to bring together the most experienced, thoughtful, and creative minds in the New Jersey labor-management community to share ideas, strategies and concerns in an academic environment where debate is encouraged and nourished.
  • Occupational Training and Education Consortium – houses a diverse group of grant-funded health, safety, environmental and workforce development projects.
