. Sam Roddick is regarded as having spearheaded the transformation of the sexual retail environment and has a background in radical activism, having worked on campaigns on pornography, feminism, exploitation, human rights and raunch culture.

 and Gordon Roddick. She was educated at Summerlea Primary School and then at Frensham Heights in Surrey until she was asked to leave. She gained only two O-Levels which is believed to have been due to undiagnosed dyslexia. On leaving Frensham, the mother of schoolmate Adae Amats suggested she work with her in Nepal where her activism began.

, and a fly-poster campaign by Saatchi and Saatchi depicting ordinary people in the throes of orgasm.

Coco de Mer’s products are made in consideration of the environment and human rights. Coco de Mer’s policy is to invest in the work of local talent, fair trade groups and cottage industries creating eclectic, edgy and spectacular ranges. As well as stocking a many designer brands, Coco De Mer also sells a range of own-brand products.

Sam Roddick is committed to enabling individuals to use sex as a positive instrument to improve and transform their lives through, which Coco de Mer achieves not only through its shops in London, Los Angeles and New York, its website Coco De Mer, but also through educational seminars and salons, interactive programmes and social events.

Coco de Mer supports grassroots charity and political activism through its non-profit branch Bondage for Freedom focussing on social and sexual issues working with a network of creatives and not for profit organisations.

 is a palm seed from the Seychelles and is the largest seed in the world. The Coco de Mer seed is said to resemble a woman’s buttocks.

Early Activism

Sam Roddick's early activism included talks, fundraisers and projects worldwide. She has given talks around North America on saving the rainforests, helped establish a Romanian orphanage project, worked on alternative economic systems for a Canadian International Development Agency and lectured at the Canadian-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce. In addition, she set up Cockroach youth magazine, raised funds and taught art at a Vancouver school.

Bondage For Freedom

Bondage for Freedom is the activism branch of Coco de Mer. Founded in 2008, as a collective it focuses on providing a free creative service for organizations fighting for human and environmental rights. It works on a number of projects with partner organisations creating campaigns, films, art and protests to raise awareness for a number of projects currently including rape and sexual violence in the DRC, sex slavery and trafficking, teenage sexual pressure and abuse and the plight of the honey bee. Bondage for Freedom is also a driving force for creative activism and art.
