History

Before 1857 Salburua wetlands had at least three major gaps: Betoño, west; Larregana, Arcaute north and the southeast. There is evidence of its extraordinary wealth of grazing, hunting and fishing that was famous throughout the region. At that time certainly had to be one of the most valuable lagoon complexes from the ecological point of view of the entire Basque Country. Around the pond Arcaute oak lay a broad plain, forest landscape characteristic of the Plains of Alava.

In 1857 he began a process of drying of the lakes and forest clearing for the cultivation of those lands. First is drained Larregana Lake, later the Arcaute and finally, in mid-twentieth century, the lake dries Betoño.

In 1994, when work began on the recovery of the ancient landscape was only a remnant of forest, north of Elorriaga, and a small wet patch near Betoño, which barely survived the last animals and plants characteristic of these media, in an environment subjected to all kinds of impacts, poaching, slums, waste disposal, etc.

Ecological restoration work began with the cancellation of the drainage of Lake Betoño. In 1998 they built a dam closure in the Canal de la Balsa, draining the ponds and Arcaute Larregana the river to Joy. Through these actions has managed to recover a space of more than 200 hectares, of which, in times of maximum flooding, 60 are sheets of water. Recently it has increased the area of the park lagoon lagoon Duranzarra restored.

The restoration of Salburua also serve as protection against flooding in the town of Vitoria-Gasteiz, which uses the lagoons and ponds, rolling extraordinary floods of rivers and Errekaleor Santo Tomás, which are helping to prevent overflows newspapers These rivers in addition to the sewerage network in Betoño.

In addition, since 1994 been carrying out restoration work and landscaping plant in the vicinity of the lakes, and along water courses, which are helping to recover part of the original wealth Salburua.

Beside the ecological recovery, have carried out actions aimed at enhancing public use and knowledge of wetland (conditioning pathways, creating living areas, installation of bird observatories and an information office).

Biodiversity

Among its ecological values may indicate the importance of their flora, with a mass of well-preserved Carex riparia

which is highly threatened. There is also a wide variety of amphibians. At present the greatest threat to these species is the incorporation by particular species of this habitat unsuitable and can end autótonas species.

no coincidence that there are large numbers of birds that use these wetlands for breeding or wintering area, and neither is to continue subsisting European mink in the area. This is due largely to the commitment that has been from the CEA, from the nursery of the Green Belt of Vitoria-Gasteiz and technicians from being made by various esutdios.

In this area are being carried out various actions aimed at conserving biodiversity and study.

Actions:

INBIOS Project
Actions to improve populations of threatened species: bats, Sand Martin and Mrtin fisherman, waders, herons and otters.
Actions to improve the conservation status of habitats, especially aquatic vegetation and the edges of ponds.
Actions to combat invasive alien species of fauna, fish and exotic freshwater crayfish American.
Proceedings of outreach and awareness regarding the protection of bats, about the impact of leaky cats and actions of the project itself INBIOS
Pilot project for the reintroduction of European mink

The overall project objective is to conduct the first pilot project of reintroduction of European mink in the river ecosystems of northern Spain.

Flora

Although the most spectacular sight are the animals, Salburua also hosts a variety of vegetation, especially wetland species. Many of these species have managed to revive after the revitalization of wetlands. A curious fact to be stressed is that wetlands hide up about thirty-five different species. Species attractive to the eyes are the Marshmallow, aconite, the sedges and orchids.

Fauna

Experts agree in pointing out the importance of wildlife, both for its diversity and the degree of threat to many species that inhabit Salburua. Save a herd of deer, introduced artificially to the marsh vegetation control, all the wildlife that lives in the wetland is of wild origin. It is known that there lives one of the carabid beetle communities most important of the Iberian Peninsula (108 species). It also hosts one of the most comprehensive communities of amphibians and reptiles of the Basque Country, highlighting the indigenous freshwater and especially, the agile frog.
Its strategic location in the heart migration path enables thousands of birds are dropped by Salburua. Some of them are in the area through the winter and even choose these ponds for breeding. But the most sympathetic of the animal that can see Salburua is the European mink. This is one of the world's most endangered carnivores.
