Encyclopedia
SS Calumet is Great Lakes bulk freighter built in 1973 as the William R Roesch for the Union Commerce Bank, Ohio, managed by Kinsman Marine Transit. The Calumet sailed for the subsidiary of Oglebay-Norton Marine, the Pringle Transit Company from 1976 to 1994, when she was transferred to Oglebay-Norton, which also marked the end of Pringle Transit.

She was renamed David Z Norton, for David Zadock Norton on March 31 1995. Its fleet mate, Paul Thayer, was renamed Earl W Oglebay in 1995. In 2006, Oglebay-Norton sold its fleet of River Class ships to Grand River Navigation and the Wisconsin and Michigan Steamship Company of Avon Lake and Lakewood Ohio. The Norton went to the WAMSC (Wisconsin and Michigan Steamship Company. The Earl W Oglebay and the Wolverine came with it too. They were renamed Earl W, David Z and Robert Pierson. The two ships were sold to Rand Logistics in 2008, having the David Z being renamed Calumet. It registered in Cleveland and was flagged American, like Wolverine was flagged Canadian. With the name change, Rand Logistics and the Lower Lakes Towing Company scrapped the original Calumet, built in 1929 for US Steel, in 2009.
