Transport Corporation. Both TTC and RGTC was later merged into one and called SETC in 1996
Initially after independence, when the tram service came to an end, due to strike of employees, the then state government, known as Madras Presidency was forced to go for Public Transport System to run by the State. Thiru Kumarasamy Raja was the Chief. Hence the entire city transport service by bus was owned by the State Government, the services to other places from Capital was run by Government only. After Thiru C N Annadurai as Chief Minister, the state become Tamil Nadu State. It is worthy to mention that as per Tamil grammar, it has to come as 'thamil nattu arasu' then a G.O. was issued by Anna (C N Annadurai), the CM as per request/advise by thiru C Rajagopalachari (Rajaji- He was the only Indian to become Governor General of Independent India from 1948 took over the charge from Lord Mount battan and hold the same till India became a REPUBLIC in 1950. Afterward he was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for short period before thiru K Kamaraj) to keep it as TAMIL NADU the name. When M. Karunanithi became the Chief Minister, he nationalised all the big private transport units and named them after the kingdom of ancient tamils as Chera, Chola, Pandia and Pallavan. Mr M Karunanithi did some remarkable things - as PWD minister, he was the reason to widen all road bridges, he was the first person to eradicate Ricksha pulling by human beings (it is still continuing in Kolkatta).
