Cricket umpire

Palmer followed his brother on to the first-class umpires list with a few matches in 1979, and was appointed to the regular first-class umpires' list for the 1980 season. He stayed there for 28 seasons, retiring at the end of the 2007 season having reached the age of 65 and having officiated in 445 first-class games as well as 469 List A matches.

His first international appearances came during the 1983 World Cup, when he umpired four games. In 1992, he was appointed to his first Test match, the third match in the series between England and Pakistan at Old Trafford
