He was involved in local government for 27 years, beginning in 1974 when he was elected as a member of Taranaki County Council. From 1983 to 2001, he was successively elected chairman of the county council, the North Taranaki District Council (formed in 1986), and Taranaki Regional Council (formed in 1989). In June 2001, after he retired, he was appointed as a Companion of the Queen's Service Order
