 in 2003 but in the summer of 2006 moved to the Guinness Premiership side Gloucester. He gained his first international cap against Australia in the autumn of 2006 coming on as a substitute, he earned his first full cap against France in the 2007 Six Nations. He was also a member of Scotland's 2007 Rugby World Cup Squad.

2006–07

During his first season with Gloucester he primarily competed with Peter Richards

 for the starting scrum-half spot. He managed to appear in 29 out of 33 Gloucester games. He started 13 of these and he came off the bench for the other 16 games. He also managed to score 3 tries.
