Osterlund started his first team in 1977. In 1979 he hired rookie Dale Earnhardt

. Earnhardt won the Rookie of the Year. In 1980 Earnhardt won the championship. Osterlund sold this team to J.D. Stacy in the middle of the 1981 season. Earnhardt drove four races for Stacy before he left for Richard Childress Racing

.Osterlund Racing has re-formed and is based out of San Jose,California. Osterlund's grandson Stasinlav competes in Legend Car racing, light modified, and heavy modified. He won three championships in 2008. Osterlund's son, Howard used to race cars with Dave Bryd as his crew chief.
