 from conception in 1977 through to the start of operations in 1988. 1990 saw his appointment as Head of the Sciences of Matter Directorate of the CEA. Thereafter he served as director of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) from 1994-2003 before his position as CERN's Director General.
