Personal life

Rick Nolan was born and raised in the 8th District. A father and grandfather, Nolan has been married to Mary Nolan for 27 years. He has been locally involved as Chairman of the Mission Township Planning Committee, president and board member of the Central Lakes College foundation raising scholarship money for disadvantaged students of all ages, and lecturer and volunteer for the Initiative Foundation on Serving in Public Office. Nolan is a hunter and a fisherman who taps maple syrup in spring and harvests wild rice in the fall.

Business experience

Nolan has been a successful local business owner, with a successful sawmill and wood pallet factory in Emily, which is now owned and operated by his son-in-law and daughter.

As a founder, chairman and president of the Minnesota World Trade Center Corporation under Governor Rudy Perpich, Nolan helped Minnesota companies export their products and generate jobs across the state. He was also the Chairman of the International Association of World Trade Centers Trade Policy Committee, world’s largest private sector international trade group.

Past political experience

Nolan served in the Minnesota State Legislature from 1968-1972.

2012 campaign for U.S. Congress

Nolan formally announced his candidacy for United States Congress on July 12, 2011. Nolan is running against incumbent U.S. Congressman Chip Cravaack

. Nolan won an 8th district straw poll of central committee delegates, which include county chairs, associate chairs and officers. Out of the four Democratic candidates, he received 55 percent of the vote, while the next closest total was 21 percent for Dan Fanning, with Tarryl Clark and Jeff Anderson receiving less than 3 percent.

Rick Nolan has received endorsements from a number of present and former elected officials, including Iron Range delegation member Tom Anzelc, former State Rep. and Eveleth Mayor Joe Begich, former State Senator and Chisholm native George Perpich (District 5), former Minnesota Senate President Don Samuelson of Brainerd, State Rep.
