Types of reviews

The most common types of research featured include:
  • Integrative Reviews: cover existing knowledge and trends in a particular area and discuss how the chosen topic is being conceptualized by literature, how research outcomes are shaped by research methods and theories in that field, and the strength or weaknesses of literature on this topic. Meta-analyses accompanied by an "interpretive framework that takes the article beyond the reporting of effect sizes and the bibliographic outcome of a computer search" also fall in this category.
  • Theoretical Reviews: typically show how theory shapes research, as research is cited and interpreted it is at the service of "the specification, explication, and illumination of a theory". Theoretical reviews deal with how theory is used as a base for research and how it frames understanding of that research, how it relates back to the theory.
  • Methodological Reviews: discuss the design, methods and procedures that can be used in general reviews and research. These reviews explore the strongest and weakest aspects of methodological tools and how certain methods limit or expand the boundaries available for learning about educational issues.
  • Historical Reviews: deal with analysis in a historical context, such as those that shape language and understanding. These historical constraints are framed in explanations to educational phenomena.
  • Commissioned Reviews: occasionally, editors solicit authors to submit reviews on specific topics or encourage readers (potential guest editors) to pose thematic topics for special issues.
