The utility is widely used.

Johnson has stated in 2002 that he has "no plans to continue development". He also recommended the program "XN Resource Editor" as a open source alternative to his own program. In 2011 he stated that he will neither release, nor sell the source code. After he had cancelled development, he released two more updates:
  • On November 19, 2009, version 3.5.2 was released as a beta. This build added support for 64-bit executables and for displaying PNG images.
  • On September 16, 2011, version 3.6 was released with support for PNG icons.
