Mäki published his first novel Enkelipölyä in 1985. His most well-known character, private detective Jussi Vares, was first introduced in the following year. His novels take place in the city of Turku

Finnish director Aleksi Mäkelä's film Vares – yksityisetsivä was released in 2004. The film was based on Mäki's novel Keltainen leski. Another film about Jussi Vares was released in 2007.

Mäki is one of the most influential modern Finnish authors. His most current novel Valkovenäläinen was released in 2009.
