working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize neighborhoods by providing critical home repair and modification services to those in need at no cost to homeowners. With the help of everyday citizen volunteers, skilled trades people, the support of local business and major corporate partners, Rebuilding Together affiliates in America’s largest cities and smallest towns make life considerably better for thousands of low-income homeowners and the communities in which they live by completing 10,000 projects per year.

In addition to its core home repair work, Rebuilding Together also rehabilitates community centers and makes other revitalizations that improve the health of the community. Rebuilding Together’s National Office is located in Washington, D.C. and has roughly 200 affiliates across the United States, working to preserve affordable homeownership.

Who Rebuilding Together serves

Rebuilding Together focuses on serving those who are forced to make the decision between vital necessities and critical home repairs in order to live in a safe environment. Those Rebuilding Together aims to serve include: low-income homeowners; the elderly, the disabled; and families with children.

Rebuilding Together’s Work and National Initiatives

Rebuilding Together has seven national initiatives which help to fill the pressing need in the communities across the country and are aligned with Rebuilding Together’s vision statement, “A safe and healthy home for every person.” These seven national initiatives are:

National Rebuilding Day

National Rebuilding Day is the annual signature event of Rebuilding Together. Held on the last Saturday in April, National Rebuilding Day is the day when affiliates from all parts of the country plan projects to celebrate the organization’s mission and to bring national attention to the plight of America’s low-income homeowners and the communities in which they live. National Rebuilding Day is the culmination of a year of planning, evaluating, training, organizing, and mobilizing hundreds of thousands of community volunteers. It is embraced by community leaders and national corporate sponsors as a way of bringing immediate impact to America’s communities in a single day. National Rebuilding Day is rooted at the foundation of Rebuilding Together as part of its 20-year history.

Safe At Home

The primary goal of Rebuilding Together’s Safe at Home program is to address home repair and maintenance issues that potentially present a safety risk, or limit the access to, or within the home. Rebuilding Together’s “Safe at Home” Program strategies include: broadening public awareness and build coalitions around the need for home safety and accessibility modifications;
provide training and technical assistance on fall prevention methods and home safety strategies; expand the affiliate network’s core competency in the delivery of home safety interventions; act as an information and referral resource on fall prevention and home safety subjects; and advocate for the needs and of low-income homeowners particularly older adults, people living with disabilities, and multi-generational families.
Safety and Prevention are grouped into three categories: falls prevention, fire safety and prevention, and general safety.

Gulf Coast Operations

In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and in the spirit of this mission, Rebuilding Together launched the Gulf Coast Operations initiative and a commitment to Rebuild 1000 homes across the Gulf Coast. Rebuild 1000 is executed in partnership with its Gulf Coast Affiliates, Sponsors, and thousands of Volunteers.

Veterans Housing

Rebuilding Together’s Veterans Housing was created to meet the growing needs of veterans from past and present wars. Rebuilding Together fills the gaps in modifications and repair services that retired and active service men and women struggle to meet. In partnership with corporate sponsors, Rebuilding Together’s Veterans Housing strives to provide safe and accessible housing for all low-income veterans.

Organizational Development Institute

The Organizational Development Institute was created to increase the training and technical services offered by the National Office to Rebuilding Together Affiliates. It seeks to meet its affiliates in the life-cycles of their organizations providing training and capacity building that will increase their abilities to grow organizationally and increase their community impact. Through expert developed curricula, the Organizational Development Institute enriches affiliates’ abilities to revitalize their communities.

Green Housing

Rebuilding Together affiliates have been utilizing green practices — and providing green home rehabilitation — since its founding over 20 years ago. Rebuilding Together believes that home repair and rehabilitation are inherently green. Through the repairs Rebuilding Together affiliates make, homeowners save money on utility bills, thrive in cleaner home environments and are better-able to afford other essential needs. Rebuilding Together’s Green Housing initiative brings funding, education, and expertise to the network of over 200 affiliates. through resource-efficient repairs that lower consumption and save homeowners money.

The History of Rebuilding Together

Rebuilding Together began with a small group of founding affiliates more than 30 years ago and continued to grow when the National Headquarters opened its doors in 1988, due to its immense growth and critical services the organization was delivering to homeowners across the country. Today, the entire Rebuilding Together network has completed more than 100,000 homes across the nation. With the help of 2.5 million volunteers, Rebuilding Together has delivered over $1 billion in market value since its founding.
