. He edited the Belgian papers Independence and Avant-Garde. In 1932 he published the book A New Order; in 1939 Life Difficult and in 1942 Book of Living and the Dead.

He continued to work and publish during the war with the agreement of the German occupiers although his relationship with the German military administration deteriorated during 1943 and on 4 October 1943 he was removed from being Editor-in-Chief of The Evening and placed under house arrest.
