First time a march of a Sindhi Nationalist political party was the big head line evening news for all English, Urdu and Sindhi TV channels and named as a remarkable and unprecedented massive show of strength of indigenous local people.

It is the fifth long march by Awami Tahreek first in December 1991 from Sukkur to Karachi, second in 1994 from Hyderabad to Karachi, third in 2001 from Bhitshah to Karachi, forth is from Sukkur to Karachi in 2005 and this is longest fifth one. There is no doubt in saying that
Awami Tahreek always gained huge support from publics and their struggle remained peaceful and non-violent. No scratch on any vehicle or any damage to property or misbehave to any persons on any basis of sect, language or creed were reported so far. On the other hand in 2001, they faced baton charge, injuries, bloodshed, lockups, and tear gas shells each day by police in a bid to foil the long march and they set new example of bravery ahead the government blockade, torture, brutality and aggression and succeeded to reach Karachi peacefully.

Founder of Awami Tahreek Rasool Bux Palijo (80) is a well-known politician of Pakistan and he earned the fame in struggling against feudalisms, marshal-laws, establishment, colonialism and imperialism. Besides top constitutional and criminal lawyer, he is an authority over world history, philosophy, science, religion and political theories and also wrote more than 40 books on numerous subjects. He remained about 11 years in jail and declared as Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International in 1981. Organizing women and Hindu scheduled Castes are his more remarkable and revolutionary traits. His continuous love, affection and guide uplifted them as first class citizens and He has broken the walls of untouchability and chains of women slavery very practically.

During passing through no-go area of Saradars in Kadh Kot, Rasool Bux Palijo expressed his views as “Through planned conspiracy, big cities of Sindh are handed over to terrorists while the rurals areas have been distributed to tribal chiefs and Jagidars and both are the agents of imperial forces. Feudalism and urban terrorism are being nourished by dictators and imperial agencies to maintain status quo. Criminal negligence of present government over the urban terrorism on Sindhi and tribal terrorism over women and Hindus are very shameful. However, the sons and daughters of Sindh without any discrimination of caste, tribe, creed and religion are ready to play their role in struggle to get back sovereignty of Sindh and the resources of Sindh”.

Averagely 500 men, women and children have walked in changing weather from hot to cold in the entire province on foot and when crossed through towns and cities the caravan turned into huge public gatherings. Leaders spoke there to highlight the issue and purposes. Caravan received warm welcome by local organizations, political parties, civil societies, bar associations at every stop along National Highway. There were singers who kept the participants energized with revolutionary songs of Shah Latif, Faiz Amed Faiz, Shaikh Ayaz, Habib Jalib, Ustad Bukhari, Sahir Ludhiyanvi, and Bhagat Kabir and also the well-worded poetic slogans were loudly chanted with pleasant rhythms as;

Jo America jo yaar aa - Ghadaar aa Ghadar aa.

Karo-kari ain jirga system - Na manzoor no manzoor.
Daryan ji Aabadgari - Band Kario band kario

People are committing suicide and selling their children due allegedly made price hike and corruption. Broad day-light dacoity is made on water, finances, employment and resources of coming generations. How long the rulers embroil the people of Sindh in concocted stories? People are full of hatred and warmly contributing their part in struggle. Hugely participation of public and political groups irrespective of socio-political and religious affiliations proved that Sindh is united”.

Mohammad Khan Bhurgri, General Secretary AT expressed the significance of march as “It’s a mammoth demonstration and protest ever held in Pakistan. Main theme of this protest is restoration of all rights of Sindh and establishment of democratic republic welfare state. Support

Rasool Bux Palijo, Chairman Awami Tehreek, has a large followings in Sindh and certain other pockets. Mr. Palejo has been influential politician and activist.
His active political career spreads on the last four decades of Pakistan’s history. He has been linked in different capacities with major socio political developments in national life. He is well read and eloquent politician who has been practicing socialist ideas in different forms at different levels.

Mr. Palijo in a very candid and informal way shared his early life, schooling, college and university days. He told that he had a penchant for social reforms since childhood. He had a strong religious frame of mind, as his family temperament was quite religious. He read various novels based on the campaigns of Muslim Generals and their exploits in far off lands.

He told that organized theft was a heroic occupation in his area, during his adolescence. People would praise and fear those involved in that field. Just to prove that he and his friends could do any thing that is regarded difficult or impossible. He formed an association of young thieves. He led that association. He failed in the annual exam, because he devoted more time to the newly formed association than his own studies.

I read “Khoon Kay Aansoo” before I completed my fifth grade. I would deliver speeches at Milaad and other religious occasions. I was impressed by Muslim warriors. As a result “I made my own private army getting inspiration from Muhammad Bin Qasim. I thought if he in the age of 17 could go and conquer a country why can not we? I then started motivating young lads of my village but they were all busy in their study the army got scattered.”

He also talked about his interaction with Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and how he sought advice from various politicians like Ameen Faheem, Shaikh Ayyaz( a poet), and himself at the time of Shimla Accord and the difficult times of 1971. G.M Syed, he told, was a strong Sindhi leader and termed Bhutto as agent of the Punjab and traitor of Sindh. G.M Syed at one time even banned Bhutto entering Sindh, his home province. Mr. Palejo told that he tried to convince G.M Syed to allow Bhutto the political freedom to interact with the people. Palejo commented that “Bhutto was a brilliant tactician not a political strategist. He had no bigger historical picture in his mind”.

Mr. Palejo further commented on Bhutto saying that he was glib and flattered Skindar Mirza saying “any impartial account of Pakistan’s history would record you above Jinnah.” He was feudal; he betrayed the aspirations of the masses. He was befooled by the establishment and lost his life as a result of his shortsightedness.” Bhutto also at one point said that ‘in third world countries military governments are unavoidable. Kalson was hero of Bhutto

He also told that he is the first matriculate of his village. His father was Patwaari in revenue department. I did matriculation in 1947, met Mr. Jinnah many times. I did law but started practical life as reporter and became assistant editor.

Mr Palejo remained associated with Sindhi Adabi Sangat. “My political and intellectual training was done in that Sangat. It was extremely disciplined body.”

The political education and awareness among Sindhis owes a lot to the teachers of that province.

Nawab Bahadar Yar Jung was an excellent orator. I had good English by the time I did matriculation, but Mr. Jinnah’s speeches were difficult to understand at that time.

Coming to the current political situations in the countery, he told that in last week SM Zafar asked me what is the future of Pakistan? I told Pakistan has no future.

I have convinced Sindhi people that 1973 Constitution is not accepted to Sindhis. My intellectual grooming has been by one of my teachers, who was Muslim but he would neither say prayer nor observe fast but he was a man of strong integrity. The other source of inspiration was M.N Roy.

Commenting on the current form of new imperialism, he said a long historical span is needed before the real spirit of socialism can be restored and brought to the force. For this you have to have an ideology that no political party other than Awami Tehreek, has today.

Talking about his meetings with Dr. Najeeb, he told that Ajmal Khattak would be translator during my chat with Najeeb.

Commenting on early communist party in Pakistan, he said all the communists were members of congress before 1947. There was no indigenous element. The support and inspiration all came from out side. He revealed that even Jinnah was expelled from Muslim league in 1948 and was replaced by Ch. Khaleeq Zaman.

He also told that Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a lone fighter for the cause of freedom. He was nationalist. But all other contemporary politicians were not that gracious. Jinnah was aware of shortsightedness of his political cronies in Muslim League.

The great legendary heroine of Sindh, the brave and restless sprit of all political struggles and the symbolic mother "JEEJEE" of entire Sindh, Zareena Baloch has been admitted to Agha Khan Hospital Karachi Pakistan in critical condition. She is facing acute multiple health complications, including short term memory loss, severe diabetes, ulcer and liver disorder.
While referring to Jeeje Zareena Baloch in a literary evening at National Centre, Leading drama writer Madam Noor ul Huda Shah once declared her the rebirth of Marui and Baghal. She said I feel privileged that I m living in the era of Jeejee Zareena Baloch, a continuity, a resurrection of modern Marui, Baghal, Mai Bakhtawar, Qurat ul Ain Tahira and Lukholan. Jeejee Zareena Baloch is an enigma, more of a character than anyone from her own works of fiction and music.
When Jiji Zarina Baloch sings, you must listen. There is little choice as you loose yourself to the timeless appeal of her voice. Her voice, you sense, has been wafting down the centuries over the arid landscape of tiny hamlets in Sindh, lifted on the cool breeze caressing the sand dunes of Thar, rippling over the coastal waters, even as it blends with the song of the fishermen. Now the same unique and celebrated voice has been encircled in the marble blocks of red-mosaic in room No 202 of Agha Khan Hospital.

For the last four decades Jeejee Zareena has remained a symbol of hope, revolution and struggle for downtrodden and oppressed Sindhi and Baloch masses. Since the early movements of anti-one-unit and 4 March till the latest MRD, Bhutto Bachayo, anti martial-law and Anti Kalabagh Dam movements she has always been at the forefront, marching with people and facing
lathi-charges, jails and tortures.
