Rana Talwar is the son of a bureaucrat. He began his career in the Bombay branch of Citibank and by the time of his leaving in 1977 he had become head of Citibank's consumer business in the Asia Pacific and Middle-East sectors. He then moved to Standard Chartered Bank

He is also a son-in-law of Kushal Pal Singh of DLF.
