is the current Speaker of the National Assembly
of Mauritius
. He has held the same office since 2005 when the labour party won the elections. He is a former Deputy Prime Minister
from 1997 to 2000 .
He is a prominent member of the labour party and was a cabinet minister from 1980 to 1982 and again in the coalition government of Sir Anerood Jugnauth and the labour Party from 1984 to 1985 . Finally he served in the cabinet of Navin Ramgoolam
.He was general secretary of the Labour in the 80's .
He is an attorney at law and practices in Mauritius .He is normally one of the highest personalities in the country. He holds the 6th most powerful office in the country after the President , Prime Minister ,Vice President ,Deputy Prime Minister and the Chief Justice .
He is recipient of both highest order merits in Mauritius . He was elevated in 1998 as Grand Officer of the order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean and was recently made Grand Commander of the same order in 2009.
