Rahul's father RM Nair is a retired Naval officer. His mother, Saraswati Nair is a housewife. Rahul is survived by his wife and three-year-old son.

He was always passionate about flying. During his career, he had flown a number of fighter planes like MiG-21.

He was once part of a Hindi Movie. In the mess scene, he was one among the cadet army that made up the backdrop for the Amitabh Bachchan-Ajay Devgan film Major Saab

Death

On March 3, 2010, an aircraft of the Sagar Pawan team crashed in Hyderabad while performing in an airshow. Pilot Commander Suresh Kumar Maurya and co-pilot Lt Cdr Rahul Nair were killed in the crash.
