Taylor, a southpaw, turned pro in 1986. In 1987, he KO´d Sugar Ray Leonard in a sparring match (when Leonard was preparing to fight World Middleweight Champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler) and in 1994 landed a shot at WBC

. Taylor scored a shocking upset TKO victory over Jackson, but lost the title in his next fight to Keith Holmes. After a two year layoff and a victory in 1998, followed by a three year layoff and a victory in 2001, Taylor retired from boxing. In 2010 he works at Fed-ex for the City of Lufkin. When he is not working, he is coaching the amateur boxers at the Boys and Girls Club. He trains alongside with them.
