 that was founded by the rapper Tonedeff

. The label was originally launched on May 5, 1997 as a multi-genre label and the first release was Tonedeff's 'Monotone EP'. The label was relaunched in 2000 as one focusing on hip-hop with a small roster of mainly New York based rappers.

In 2001 the label had its first releases since the relaunch. The first of these were Tonedeff's 'Hyphen EP' and CunninLynguists

 debut album 'Will Rap For Food'. Both albums gained fair amounts of publicity, if not overwhelming. In 2002, the label released the first of a long running mix CD series titled 'Asterisk'. 'Asterisk: One' was originally put together to sell at Rocksteady Crew's 25th Anniversary Celebration and featured roster members Tonedeff, Mr. Mecca, PackFM and Deacon the Villain of CunninLynguists. The mix CD also featured the first appearance of QN5 supergroups Extended Famm and The Plague.

2002 also saw the release of Extended Famm's debut (and so far only) album. 'Happy Fuck You Songs' was released to critical acclaim. Extended Famm is a group consisting of QN5 artists Tonedeff, PackFM, Substantial

. Focusing on 'alternative posse cuts' the album became a hit on the New York battle scene and cemented QN5 on the underground scene's collective consciousness.
