The breed was intended as an excellent dual purpose, free ranging chicken with excellent laying capabilities as well as a very large structure for meat production. Pure Koekoeks have an exclusive black-and-white barred appearance, with the chicks sexable soon after hatching due to unique gender markings. Potchefstroom koekoeks are also known for maintaining good egg production, even with poor quality or insufficient feeding.
