The first sawmill

 there was built in 1863. At its peak, the Northwestern Logging Company employed almost 500 workers there; the town had a public school, churches, and a population of over 1,100. Northwestern Logging started to cut back their operation there in 1891, moving their offices out of Porter’s Mills to Stanley, Wisconsin

. The last mill in Porter's Mills was dismantled in 1899, and the population moved on, to Stanley, Eau Claire or elsewhere. By 1904, the town had ceased to be.
