), and is the southern terminus of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The port is located just eight miles from the border of Mexico at the Rio Grande. It's hinterland is most of Northern Mexico, including the large industrial city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. The mouth of the Brownsville ship channel is the old harbor of Los Brazos de Santiago, which was the landing place of Spanish conquistador Pineda in 1519, and others.
