History

Pitt Ohio Express was founded in 1979 by the Hammel brothers Robert, Kenneth, and Charles III. The company began with 3 trucks, three drivers and one terminal. In 1982, Pitt Ohio opened its second terminal in Cleveland, Ohio

Pitt Ohio Truckload, powered by ECM Transport, was formed in 2005 when Pitt Ohio Express acquired a majority interest in ECM Transport, LLC, a truckload company also located in the Pittsburgh area. ECM Transport maintains a comprehensive fleet with over 300 tractors and 1,200 trailers.

Pitt Ohio Express operates 1,756 trailers, more than 670 tractors, 352 straight trucks, and 47 sprinter vans, all with an average age of less than 10 years. The company operates 21 service centers in the Mid-Atlantic.

Safety

Pitt Ohio Express is a four-time recipient of the American Trucking Association’s President’s Trophy. This is the highest of Safety Awards presented to motor carriers in the transportation industry, recognizing the company for having the best overall safety program.

In 2007, the company received first place for the General Commodities LTL, Local between 10,000,000 and 50,000,000 miles. Pitt Ohio also received first place for the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association Overall Winner of General Commodities over 15,000,000 miles. In 2008 Pitt Ohio Express received second place for the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association Great West Safety Award for Outstanding Achievement in Highway Safety over 15,000,000 miles.

Awards

In 2009, Pitt Ohio Express won its 15th Quest For Quality Award in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Pitt Ohio's expedited service, "Fast Track", received honors for the fifth year in a row.
