 from Anniesland Waverley in 1971 and he played only one first team game before joining Hamilton Academical two years later. He moved to England to play for Carlisle United in 1975 and became a regular in midfield before moving to Chesterfield

, in which he was a key player in a side that came close to winning promotion in 1980 and 1981 and a member of the team that won the last ever contested Anglo Scottish Cup. Bonnyman, memorably scored a brace against his former club Rangers as Chesterfield beat them 3-0 in the Quarter Final second leg.

A move to Grimsby Town followed where he figured regularly in the Grimsby midfield before moving on to Darlington
