Phi Lambda Rho

Phi Lambda Rho Sorority, Inc was founded upon four common objectives: Sisterhood, Academics, Community Service, and Promotion of the Chicana/Latina Culture.

These objectives represent us and our self-respect as Latina's in our continued pursuit of higher education.

National History

Phi Lambda Rho originated as the club Flor de Aztlan at California State University, Stanislaus located in Turlock, California. In 1993, the only existence of any Greek organizations on campus were Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Theta Chi fraternity, and Nu Alpha Kappa fraternity. Phi Lambda Rho would later become the first Chicana Latina Sorority on the CSU Stanislaus campus.

In the beginning, Flor de Aztlan was established as a support group for women pursuing higher education. After some time, the initial members decided to take the organization to a different level and transform the club into a sorority. This would allow the organization to have more recognition on campus and also to limit the membership with an intense selection process. Members divided into committees and researched various sororities but only to find that every sorority they came across lacked their ideals and goals. It was then that the group decided that they had no other choice but to establish one of their own.

Phi Lambda Rho, which reads Flor in Greek, was adopted as the official name of the organization. Flor de Aztlan adopted the principles of Academic Excellence, Sisterhood, Community Service, and the Promotion of the Chicana and Latina cultures. It would take nine months of concentrated research and proficient preparation to transform Flor de Aztlan into Phi Lambda Rho.

As such, members foresaw a prosperous future for Phi Lambda Rho. The sorority later adopted a more structured form of governance by establishing a National Board of Directors in 2002. And in the fall of 2002, the sorority was incorporated under the laws of California State making Phi Lambda Rho an official Non-Profit organization recognized by the state of California.

Since its induction in 1993, Phi Lambda Rho continues the rich and rewarding traditions that the founding mothers worked so hard to achieve. Not only do the sisters maintain the integrity and purpose of the organization by upholding the four objectives, but they also develop character, commitment, and the responsibility necessary for tomorrow's leaders. While the organization remains small in numbers, it prides itself in the quality of its members. In the past decade alone, Phi Lambda Rho has contributed to a number of programs and organizations throughout the state working for and with the Latino community.

Today, tomorrow, and always, Phi Lambda Rho will remain the organization committed to its traditions of academic achievement, sisterhood, service, and cultural awareness. We are and will continue to be an organization unlike any other.
