He won the 1979-80 Men's NCAA Ice Hockey Championship and was on the roster(JV team) for the 1976-77 championship. While at the University of Minnesota Hayek was part of the freshman class of 76'-77' that many consider the greatest in Gopher hockey history. He has since coached youth hockey in Minnesota.
