He was Australian Junior Champion, then in 1981 he won the Australian 100 metres Championships. He then competed at the Pacific Conference Games where he won 2 Gold Medals in the 100m and 200m, he also added a Silver medal in the 4x100m for the Australian relay team.

Also in 1981 he clocked a manuel 20.3 in the 200 in Hobart, Tasmania. In 1982 he won the Australian 200 metres title, and finished 2nd in the 100 metres to Paul Narracott
