. Petaluma High School is located in the city of Petaluma, California. Petaluma High School serves the westside of Petaluma and many of the rural areas that surround the city in both Sonoma County and Marin County. The school passed the 800 API score for the first time in 2010.

Administrative Team

At the end of the 2010-2011 school year, Brian Howard who had been the principal for four years and Kimberly Kern who had been the Assistant Principal for 2 years left the school. Mr. Howard departed to become the principal of Willowside Middle School, which is part of the Oak Grove School District which serves the area in between Santa Rosa, CA and Sebastopol, CA. Ms. Kern left to become the assistant principal at White Hill Middle School which is in the Ross Valley School District which serves San Anselmo, CA and Fairfax, CA.

As a result, the school will have co-interim principals for the upcoming year. Frank Lynch who served as principal at Petaluma High from 1986-1995 and a is a retired superintendent in King City, West Sonoma County, Lompoc and Crescent City will be one of the interim principals. The other is Marilyn Stratford who served as Director of Student Services for Petaluma City Schools from 2003-2008 and as Principal at Casa Grande High School from 1995-2003. Bennett Holley, a physical education teacher at the school was named as an interim vice principal for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The only returning administrator is David Stirrat, an assistant principal who is beginning his fourth year at the school.

Block Scheduling

The school (along with nearby Casa Grande High) is set to a “block schedule”, in which there are only three classes (or four, if students choose to take a before school class known as “zero period”). These classes are longer, giving students time for learning in class, doing homework, and asking any questions on homework.

Wildlife Museum

Petaluma High School is also the home of the Petaluma Wildlife Museum, the worlds largest and only museum that is solely run by students.

Football

In 2009, Petaluma High football had one of its most successful seasons in years, finishing the season 12-1 and making it to the NCS Division 2 quarterfinals. However, they lost in the quarterfinals to Eureka High School (California)

 of Eureka, CA. Steve Ellison was the coach of Petaluma High football for the past 31 seasons, and just retired with Manuel Lopes. Coach Ellison's record at Petaluma High stands at 218-173-7(Wins-Losses-Ties) which includes his time with Sacred Heart

Manufacturing Technology Program

Petaluma High's Manufacturing Technology program is the only NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) accredited high school program in the state of California. Dan Sunia is the Manufacturing Technology Instructor, and won a 2010 Golden Bell Award in the category of “Partnerships and Collaboratives” for his program, “Engineering Design and Apprentice Trades Skills.” The Golden Bell award is given by the CSBA (California School Boards Association).
