While there is no limit to products that can be evolved with these technologies. PD currently focus on the following groups of devices:

(1) well-being and fitness devices (technology branded as Live-Lite™) featuring biometric measurement functions such as heart rate monitoring and pedometers functions, and enhanced usability functions such as global positioning, voice-out and training profiles;

(2) personal portable entertainment devices, such as portable media player and digital mobile televisions;

(3) "lifestyle" consumer electronic devices such as mobile phones (GSM and Android smartphone), and mobile Internet device.

The company was founded in 1999, by three professors, Dr. Jack Lau, Prof. Chi Ying Tsui, and Prof. Roger, Shu Kwan Cheng.

Being one of the first companies accepted by the Entrepreneurship Program, and HKUST as shareholder since 2000, the company received support from HKUST such as space in the HKUST’s on-campus technology incubator and related services, designation of an advisory team providing guidance on technical and management issues, and introductions to potential investors, sources of venture capital and potential partners during the start-up stage. Moreover, certain staffs are granted access to the resources and facilities such as library, research and testing facilities, and recreational facilities. The three professors are currently serving HKUST, Dr. Lau is an Adjunct Associate Professor, Prof. Tsui is an Associate Professor, and Prof. Cheng is a Professor in the Electrical and Computing Engineering Department.

The company engages in design supply chain management. The turnkey solutions cover the following services: concept consultation, technology feasibility study, embedded firmware, software, hardware, mechanical and industrial design and development, intellectual property research, material and component sourcing, packaging design, manufacturing, packaging, quality management, shipping, logistic management and after-sales support. The company outsources certain processes along the design supply chain, such as manufacturing, packaging, shipping and after-sales services to subcontracting OEMs and third party services providers. Such arrangement enables the company to deliver the finished products to customers without incurring the fixed costs for operating a manufacturing facility. The company manages the quality of the products and solutions through the engineering team and quality assurance team, who oversees the entire supply chain, ensuring that the products and solutions delivered would meet the requirements and specifications of the customers. This business model also allows the company to leverage on the core technologies in DSP-based firmware and algorithms in a span of product categories with relatively low overhead when compared with traditional manufacturers.

PD major customers include leading international brand name vendors and Fortune 500 companies. Since 2007 and up to June 2009, more than 14 million consumer electronic devices which utilized PD technologies had been shipped.

2010

Mobile devices:

The company entered with full force into the mobile operator/equipment market. Among various mobile initiatives and products, the company provided WiMAX Voice-over Internet Protocol (“VoIP”) telephony equipments to Africa and has also started shipment of GSM modules to the utility sector for applications, such as automatic meter reading devices, in the PRC.

Heart rate monitoring via ear bud type headphone:

As a new member of the "Live-Lite" series, by combining the heart rate monitor with an innovative earphone design, is a first of a kind earphone which delivers high quality audio, and detects heart rate from the ear canal. This ear bud type headphone uses Near Field Infra-Red Heart Rate Monitor which pairs an Infra-Red transmitter and receiver; emits beams of infra-red to the blood vessels and receives the reflected beams. The PD algorithm analyzes the changed in intensity of the infra-red light beams transmitted to and reflected from blood vessels, and derives heart rates.

2009

Live-Lite:

The company launched their own branded "Live-Lite" series of products in July 2009. The "Live-Lite" series are well-being and fitness products featuring features to tailor for fitness and sports usage.

Netbook:

In view of the future growth potential of the netbook computer market, in particular in the PRC, the company developed and provided netbook computer solutions.

Digital photo frame:

The company developed a digital photo frame with on-line photo album support, among with other features such as RSS instant message, and internet radio.

Water-proof digital mobile television:

The company developed a water-resist digital television.

2005

1.8-inch hard disk drive digital audio player:

Based on SigmaTel's STMP3500 product family, PD hard disk drive player development kit enables easy entry to the hard disk drive MP3 player market. Using the development kit, PD developed the 1.5GB HD MP3 player.

2002

Car Digital Recordable Jukebox: Derived from the home jukebox, the car jukebox equipped with a detachable hard drive that can be used as an auxiliary music server at home.

2000

Digital Recordable Jukebox: The home music appliance equipped with a 20GB hard drive, user could transfer music from a PC, rip tunes onto the Jukebox's hard drive from an audio CD, or copy songs from an MP3 CD. Ripped files recorded through the line-in jack get converted to the MP3 format.

Embedded Linux

The company were provided with certain technical information about Android-based devices by IC manufacturer, and began the research and development in 2008. Since then, the company has been developing open source-based Embedded Operating Systems, firmware and applications for DSP-based consumer electronic devices.

To date, PD has already developed a customized user interface, running on the latest Android version, with access to Android Market; ready for implementation on smart phones and devices.

The company has also participated in projects and events which promote the benefits of embedded Linux to the community.
