Gameplay

In Payday: The Heist, players use a variety of firearms to complete objectives (usually centered around stealing a certain object or a particular amount of funds). The game plays from the first person perspective, but offers a few twists on the standard FPS formula. Killing civilians is generally frowned upon in-game, meaning players have the option of restraining civilians until the heist concludes. Should any player die during the heist, one of his teammates may release a civilian in exchange for permission for the player to respawn. Each heist is generated randomly, though it typically involves dealing with law enforcement, which can range from standard patrol officers to S.W.A.T operatives.

Heists

The game has no major plot but mainly focuses on four criminals (Dallas, Hoxton, Chains and Wolf) who team up together to create their own heists. Chronologically, the group's first heist took place at the First World Bank, where they entered a vault by using thermite

and stole a large amount of money. A post-game message congratulates the group, telling them that they are "set for life", but also recommends several more heists purely for the enjoyment of them. The full list is available below:

First World Bank

The criminals try to rob the bank after they hire an insider to put thermite into a copy printer and uses the thermite to burn a hole into the room above the storage vault and steal the money inside.

Heat Street

The four men are betrayed by an inside accomplice and try to escape the wrath of the police and capture the accomplice.

Panic Room

The criminals enter a dilapidated apartment building where a drug deal is going on but the main objective is to steal the cash stowed away in a steel panic room and try to drill and lift the room out of the apartment.

Green Bridge

The four men attempt to help a special prisoner out of his drive to jail by stopping the police escort and lead him off the bridge.

Diamond Heist

The hardest mission yet, the four are tasked to sneak into a skyscraper

which has a jewel vault inside.

Slaughterhouse

The criminals are able to attack an armored car and break into a nearby slaughterhouse to have time to break into it.
Enemies=

Guard(Example: Bank Guards at the First World Bank)

Guards are the weakest enemies - armed only with a pistol and not wearing body armour. They can be taken as hostages as there are usually a fair number of them at the beginnning of most heists. Dont waste anything other than Pistol ammo on them.
Patrol Officer

A step up from the Guards, they are usually armed with Shotguns and Pistols. A little stronger than the guards and many times more numerous. These guys are usually in large numbers around the first few minutes of a heist, and quickly taper off once the Police HQ realise you are armed to the teeth. Most go down in a couple of rounds of the assualt rifle or one shot of the M308.
S.W.A.T Operative

There are two different types of SWAT operative - Blue SWAT and Heavy SWAT.
  1. Blue Swat - Armed with Assualt Rifles and Shotguns. They have body armour which protects them from short bursts of the Assualt Rifle while they go down from one shot from the M308. They stay numerous throughout Heists and make up the vast majority of assualt wave Officers
  2. Heavy Swat - Like the above, but doubley armoured and as such a lot tougher to take down. Aim for the head for quick kills. Falls to a half-mag of assault rifle, or two M308 rounds.

FBI

These guys appear mid-way through a heist - only armed with pistols and no body armour they are more likely to die than to take the player into custody. They are also armed with smoke bombs, covering the composition of the next assault wave from the players.

Special Units

Special units are law enforcement officers with special gear and are more rare than previous types of enemies. Each one has a special equipment or ability that makes them more challenging than regular officers. Additionally, they usually have a audio cue (sound of weapons charging, police radio chatter) announced before they arrive. The number and type of special units depends on the difficulty of the mission and how far along in the mission the players are.

Unlike other law enforcement officers, shouting simply provides a red highlight around them; there is no way to force them to surrender.

Bulldozer

The toughest special unit in the game - Covered from head to foot in bomb-disposal gear, and armed with a rapid-fire shotgun these juggernaughts can take a hideous amount of punishment before falling. They are suprisingly agile at times, meaning that they can occansionally get the jump on the players. Once they are near death, the bullet resistant glass on the helmet smashes open allowing head shots to drop the beast. The fastest way to deal with one is to open up with the M308 as fast as possible while aiming for the head, as the other weapons take far too long.

Taser

The "Taser" is a Heavy SWAT with a taser gun. They can visually distinguished from other Heavy SWAT by their bright yellow shoulder pads and gray helmets. When in distance, they electrocute the player, causing their weapon to sporadically fire and their camera to jitter and shake, making it nearly uncontrollable. The player still has a chance to aim at the "Taser" and interrupt his attack, but cannot reload if his weapon runs out of ammo. After being tased for a short while, the player is downed.

Shield

The "Shield" is an officer carrying a large bullet-proof shield and armed with an SMG. They tend to block whoever is firing on them, making it difficult to impossible to defeat them alone and in narrow halls. Flanking them as a group is the easiest way to bring them down. They arrive with a few other officers, and are as armored as a Heavy SWAT.

Sniper

Armed with an ultra-accurate rifle that can down the player in a couple of shots these officers are usually only seen at distance, otherwise they are the same as a Blue Swat

Cloaker

These are like spec op guys of tom clancy games. They have no audio cue at all, are armed with an SMG and if they hit you once, you go in to bleed out straight away. They are also very tough (3-4 M308 rounds) and have the delightful habit of not being in the main line of fire, circling around the players until they are in a position where they can defeat them easily.. They are also extremely agile, rolling away if under a lot of fire. Should be considered as dangerous (if not more so) than the Bulldozer.

Trial

A Trial is available for the PS3 Version of Payday for free. This trial restricts the player to one heist (First World Bank), but still contains the "Reputation" system, upgrades, unlockable items but you can't unlock weapons at all and it only lets you go up to reputation 10.
