John inherited the title of Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne from his father as well as Castle Lyon ( now Castle Huntly

) with had been purchased by 1st Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne in 1614. Legend has it that his daughter, Adelaide Lyon fell in love with one of the manservats of the house and began plotting an elopement with him. When the plot was discovered, John locked his daughter away in one of Castle Lyon's towers. When word reached the girl that her love had been excecuted, she threw herself out of the tower window, plunging to her death. Now known as the White Lady of Castle Huntly, the ghost has been spotted wandering the grounds, or else in the window of the tower from which she allegedly hurrled herself.
