The story of "Paper Rosie"

The song is about an elderly woman, a paper rose vendor (who gets her name from her trade), whom a young man meets in a roadside tavern. The woman, aged and homeless, sells the roses for a dime to make a meager income.

The young man -- who shares his experience in first person -- feels compelled to buy a rose to help the woman out. The woman thanks the man, then walks outside. As the man is leaving, he sees the woman has collapsed and unresponsive outside the door. The man then hears a choir of angels and church bells ringing in the distance, singing, "Rosie, Paper Rosie."
