The Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC) is an autonomous corporation attached to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, of the Government of Pakistan
. It was created in 1974 with an authorized capital of Rs.1,000 million to expand and help mineral development activities in the country. The Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation was previously known as Resource Development Corporation.
It operates four coal mines
, four salt mine
s/ quarries and a silica sand quarry. PMDC produces 10% of the coal and 45% of the total salt production in the country. Its annual turn over during the year 2003-2004 was Rs.584.864 million.
A board of Directors consisting of several Directors and a Managing Director supervises the activities of the corppration. The board is headed by the Chairman who is the highest authority and is appointed directly by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Amjad Warriach was the last Chairman PMDC. Amjad Warraich was preceded by Mirza Muhammad Nasir Baig who is the current Chairman of PMDC and was appointed in 2010 by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani. He is a member of Pakistan People's Party and was a federal minister in Benazir Bhutto's tenures.
PMDC joins hands with local and international private and semi-autonomous/autonomous agencies as joint ventures both for exploration and mining.
The company provides free medical facilities to its mining community and all other employees. It is also running two Secondary Schools, one Women's College at graduate level and a Mine Survey Institute imparting education to the mining as well as local community. It has developed a tourist resort at Khewra
to provide social services and save national mining heritage.
