An example of oeconomus used to designate a "manager" is in Luke 12:42 "The Lord answered, 'Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?'"

The genitive form of the word, (Economou) is also a common surname in Modern Greek. In English, it has also been translated as Economos.

It is a title in the Roman Catholic Church.
In the 1983 Code of Canon Law, an oeconomus is the diocesan finance officer (c. 494).
