Established in 1888, the club claims to be the oldest in continual existence in New Zealand. They have twice won the Chatham Cup

After amalgamating with Maori Hill (founded 1904) in 1972, the club was briefly known as Dunedin North End (1972–1974) and then as North End United, a name it used until 1990.
