Nordderby
Encyclopedia
The Nordderby, or North derby is a match between Hamburger SV
Hamburger SV
Hamburger Sport-Verein, usually referred to as HSV in Germany and Hamburg in international parlance, is a German multi-sport club based in Hamburg, its largest branch being its football department...

 and Werder Bremen
SV Werder Bremen
SV Werder Bremen is a German sports club best known for its association football team playing in Bremen, in the northwest German federal state of the same name. The club was founded on 4 February 1899 as Fußballverein Werder by a group of sixteen vocational high school students who had won a prize...

, the two most successful and popular clubs in Northern Germany. The game was first contested in 1927 with HSV recording a 4-1 away win. Since the founding of the Bundesliga in 1963, the match has been held twice every season, except in 1980–81, because Werder had been relegated to the 2. Bundesliga the season before. To date 139 games have been contested with Werder holding a slight lead of 50 wins to HSV's 48. 41 games have ended in a stalemate.

Rivalry culture

Although HSV share a city rivalry with St. Pauli there have been few games between the two as St. Pauli have spent the majority of their existence in lower divisions. This has led HSV fans to regard Werder as their main rivals.
Police presence is strong on days that the two play to avoid hooligan clashes. In 1982 a Bremen fan was attacked by a Hamburg group known as the Lions. He died from his injuries the following day in what became Germany's first football violence related death.
Like many other football rivalries, there has been a long standing rivalry between the cities of Hamburg and Bremen long pre-dating football.

The derby reached new heights in 2008/09 season when the two met four times in 18 days. Werder were mid table and at risk of missing out on European football, while HSV where challenging for the league title. On April 22, 2009, in the DFB-Pokal Semi-final Werder beat HSV on penalties 4-2 after drawing 1-1 in 120 minutes of play, it was the first game between the two to be decided on penalties. Eight days later in the UEFA Cup Semi-finals HSV came away with 1-0 victory and a crucial away goal going into the second leg. Seven days later HSV went 1-0 up and looked like progressing to the final but Werder hit back scoring 3 away goals to win 3-2, progressing on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate score. Only 3 days later the two met again this time at Werder's Weserstadion ending in a 2-0 home victory, effectively ending HSV's title aspirations. Werder would go onto lift the DFB-Pokal but lost the UEFA Cup final.
