The newspaper was founded in 1914, first published as a magazine before becoming a newspaper. It is the longest-running circulated newspaper in Myanmar. The newspaper was nationalised in 1969. In 1993, the Working People's Daily , a state-run newspaper that first appeared in 1963, was renamed the New Light of Myanmar in 1989. It is a daily printed in both English
