This collection of never before heard interviews and demos by Mark Heard was originally intended as a prerelease EP, paving the way for a full length collection of more unreleased music that was to be released later the same year on Fingerprint, entitled All She Wanted Was Love. For a variety of reasons, that full length project never materialized and fans would have to wait three more years to hear some more of Heard's unreleased recordings on the Hammers and Nails project put out by Paste Music.

The interview segments were taken from a phone interview with writer Brian Quincy Newcomb. Since it was recorded at Fingerprint, only Heard's answers were audible on the recording. So the producers had to do some creative editing to make the segments make sense to the listener and sound like intros to the songs.

Mystery Mind began its life with the title Mercy of the Flame and was originally going to be released independently by the producers with all proceeds being donated to the Heard family, but Fingerprint Records liked the final project enough that they wanted to release it themselves. Fingerprint had the album mastered and created new artwork based around the previously unpublished cover photo of Mark.
