Muhammad Jafar is the Vice-President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind
and was the First National President of Students Islamic Organisation of India
. He is also the member of topmost decision-making and leadership organ of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind
, the Markazi Majlis e Shura (Central Advisory Council)
He became the youngermost member of JIH in Bihar in 1973. In April, 1982 he became Nazim-e-Aala (President) of Halqa-e-Talaba Islami Bihar which merged into newly formed all India organisation, Islami Tanzeem-e-Talaba, which was later on renamed as Students Islamic Organisation of India. He was elected the first all India President of SIO in 1983 and led the organisation till 1985. After retirement from SIO, he was appointed as Ameer-e-Halqua, JIH Bihar for one term(1986–90).
In 1990 he became the Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and held this responsibility till 2007 during the Imarat (Presidentship) of Maulana Sirajul Hassan and Dr.Abdul Haque Ansari. In 2007, he was appointed as Naib Ameer-e-Jamaat (Vice President) by Maulana Jalaluddin Umri, the newly elected Ameer-e-Jamaat.
Mohammad Jafar has been groomed primarily by (late) Dr. Ziaul Hoda with the qualities of dedication, sacrifice and simple living during his early age in the Islamic movement. He remained a grassroot worker for a long period and became whole-time worker in JIH Halqa Bihar office in 1973. During Emergency in 1975 he was also arrested along with Dr. Ziaul Hoda and other Jamaat wokers and remained in jail for four months.
He is cousin brother of Maulana Syed Nizamuddin, Secretary General of All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
He has been member of the Executive Committee of All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat since 1990. Presently he holds the responsibility of Vice President of the Mushawarat (Syed Shahabuddin). He is also member of Babri Masjid Co-ordination Committee.
In addition to his responsibilities in JIH, he also holds the position of Vice President, Human Welfare Trust and Human Welfare Foundation, New Delhi, Chairman, Society of Bright Future, a disaster management & relief society and member of Managing Committees of various Trusts and societies established by Islamic movement in India.

Mohammad Jafar has graduated from Patna University. During his college days, he came into contact of Dr. Hassan Raza (presently Ameer-e-Halqa JIH Jharkhand) ans was attracted to Quran Study circle of Dr.Ziaul Hoda. Mohammad Jafar started his journey in Islamic movement as member of Halqa-e-Tolaba Muttafeqeen Jamaat-e-Islami Patna launched by Dr. Ziaul Hoda, the then Ameer,JIH Patna in late sixties.He became the youngermost member of JIH in Bihar in 1973.
