History

The club was established in 1986, through the merger of two other rugby union clubs, the Stade Montpelliérain and MUC Rugby. Montpellier have thus far not made it to a championship final, but have won a number of other titles. In 1993 the club won the Challenge de l'Espérance.

In the early 2000s there was a lot of success for the team as well; they were promoted to the top division of the French league system (the Top 14), after becoming champions of the Rugby Pro D2
