Newspaper

The school newspaper is called the Eagles' Eyrie and is largely student-run. English teacher Chip Carter oversees the project as of July 2011 as Journalism and its prerequisite, Journalism Skills, are both elective courses. Issues are released every three weeks on friday.

Club Achievements

Mills E. Godwin High School is the founder of the Junior Zookeepers of America. The Junior Zookeepers of America was started in the Fall of 2008 by five founding members. The club has helped raise zoological and ecological awareness in the high school as well as to the campuses of many universities. The club has recently been established at VCU, Virginia Tech, Radford

Math, Science, and Technology Center

Godwin High School is famous for its Center for Math, Science, and Technology. This program allows students to excel in the areas of math and science, provides unique and innovative learning experience through specialized courses, and promotes the expansion of opportunities for individual students. This speciality center provides qualified students the opportunity to pursue their special interests while completing their requirements for graduation. Specialty Center students are required to enter science competitions at least once a year. Most of the time, these students perform exceptionally well.

Chorus

The Choral program at Mills E. Godwin High School is taught by Sherri Matthews. The classes include Eagles Combination (non-select mixed choir), Musical Illusions (select womens choir), A capella (select women's choir), Debut (select show choir), and Madrigals (select mixed choir). All choirs receive high rankings. The choirs perform all over the Richmond area and are often in high demand. The choir program also travels once a year to different parts of the nation. Also, outside of the school hours, there is a male barbershop quartet and a female beauty shop quartet which have both been the highest scoring youth quartets in the Middle Eastern Division since they have started.

Band

The Mills E. Godwin Marching Eagles are one of the most renowned marching bands in Virginia. Their 2010 show James Bond can be seen on November 6, 2010 at their annual field show. Curtis Franklin also played James Bond. The selections in this years show include Fight or Flight, Port au Prince, The World is Not Enough and Revenge.

The band and chorus recently performed at the Avery Fisher Hall in the Lincoln Center in
New York.

Sporting achievements

  • Baseball- Led to two State Championships (1987 and 1999) Their best team, however, was 2005
  • Golf- 4 straight state championships (1994–1997)
  • Tennis (boys)- 13 AAA State Championships, most recently in 2009.
  • Tennis (girls)- many AAA State Champions, currently four consecutive (2007–2010).
  • Cross Country (boys)- 2011 team was district champions, regional champions, and 4th at the State Meet.
  • Football - Central Region Champions 1984, 1988; Colonial District Champions 1984, 1987, 1988, 1989,1990, 2000, 2003
  • Soccer (girls)- 2008, 2009, 2010 District Champions; 2009 Regional Championsl 2009 State Finalists
  • Soccer (boys)- Won the HSL soccer tournament every year since 1995; Became the first Central Region team to win the AAA State Championship by finishing undefeated in 2003. The 2003 boys soccer team also finished the Spring season as the top team in the nation, recognized by Soccer America magazine, National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and Studentsports.com.
  • Track (boys) Won the schools first District Championship in the indoor season of 09-10 as well as the outdoor season of 09-10.
  • Cheerleading - 2010 Won districts and is currently in the running for states
  • Boys Volleyball-2006 District Champions
  • Godwin High School Winterguard - 2010 First Place at four competitions, Second place winner at Atlantic Indoor Association Championships (Located at Grassfield High School)
