Known to many people at the time as "The Greatest Ball Player in the country", he chose to retire due to the many injuries he suffered during his playing days. After baseball, he owned and ran a cafe

. Mike died at the age 65 due to complications from surgery. Operations were done to repair his knees, but he contracted blood poisoning. He was buried at St. Agnes Cemetery
