Smith began his career in 2001 as a reporter for Boston Globe', where for three years he primarily covered the New England Patriots
and the National Football League. In 2003, while at the Globe, he began appearing on ESPN's Around the Horn. He joined ESPN full-time in September 2004 as an NFL reporter/analyst for ESPN and ESPN.com, as well as a regular Around the Horn panelist
Since joining the network Smith has served as one of its key NFL "insiders," a correspondent for its primetime newsmagazine show, E:60, and along with maintaining a regular presence on Around the Horn has frequently hosted various programs such as NFL Live, College Football Live, Outside the Lines: First Report, ESPN First Take, and SportsNation.
Smith, along with Charissa Thompson
can now be seen weekday afternoons on ESPN2 co-hosting Numbers Never Lie, which debuted September 12, 2011.
