 during which he became the first player to wear #69 in a regular season game. Throughout his career he was known as a feared enforcer, earning his nickname The Mangler. The nickname, however did not come from Mel's fighting, it came from his locker tag, M.Angelstad.

While in Thunder Bay he played for both the Thunder Bay Senators and the Thunder Cats, wearing number 27, and spawning several bootlegged video collections of his fights. It was a rare night when Mad Mel wasn't the last man standing, but his ice presence was also dangerous for his forward passes and set-up skills. While he could never be accused of being a sniper, he was versatile enough the not be a liability on the ice like most goons.

During the 2003–04 NHL season Angelstad appeared in two games with the Washington Capitals, registering a total of zero points and two penalty minutes.
