Mate was first noticed by the National Team while playing rugby at the University of Utah. He has since played for the North America 4 Tournament, the U.S. Team that played Munster in Chicago and the Rugby World Cup squad that played in France. In fact, Mate played in all four matches at the RWC and scored a try against England in the USA’s first match of the tournament.

Matekitonga just finished up his schooling at the University of Utah and following his performance in the Rugby World Cup was scouted by Pukekohe to play in New Zealand. He is now playing with Pearl City, in Iowa.

Matekitonga's father, brother and uncle also played rugby.
